Homeschooling in our Home
A lot of the homeschoolers I know use certain curriculum and methods of teaching exclusively. (e.g. Charlotte Mason Method, Classical Conversations, Abeka, Bob Jones, AOP, etc) That is perfectly fine if it works for your family. I have chosen to mix things up a bit and use different aspects of the different teaching methods and curriculum available.
4th grade curriculum:
Pictured here is mostly Masterbooks curriculum. He is using Zaner-Bloser for grammar which give him quick and easy lessons so he can move on to the books he really loves. He also is reading a chapter book, and we have creative writing prompts in a notebook to help put their language arts skills to use. I have them read one chapter a day in their chapter books. I will post later which books I have for my boys to pick from. My fourth grader learns best through reading and mostly Charlotte Mason Method. He has two science books because he loves to learn about science, but also loves art. While he learns science pretty easily, I found the worksheets that go with these books are a bit difficult for him so I also purchased AOP Lifepac Science for lessons a bit more on his level that I can use for grading and testing what he has learned. The Lifepac unit is not shown in the picture above. He is hardwired with the mind of an artist. He is my creative child. He loves reading, learning, and creating things, and he often leaves big messes from all of his masterpieces.
2nd grade curriculum:
Pictured here are language arts and social studies from Masterbooks, Intereactive Science from Pearson Homeschool, and the thin book on top is Alpha Omega Lifepac Math. My second grader is a very strategic child. He likes to just get the lessons done and move onto other things. I bought him the Interactive Science to keep him engaged in learning. He does not learn well just through reading books although he's an excellent reader. He gets bored easily so I needed a science program that would keep him interested, and I found that with the Pearson books. They include lessons both on workbook pages and video demonstrations online. He has been loving it. For him to do well, the lessons need to be short and sweet.
We also go to an art class once a month to be taught by a professional. We go to Awana Club at church once a week to help the boys with scripture memory. We also have some of the boys in sports. They are allowed to pick one sport a year to play. I have one that loves tball, one soccer, and my other loves basketball. My fourth boy loves going to Trail Life. He's not that into sports so I allowed him to join Trail Life instead to learn about nature, science, and good character.
